What to Expect from Support at Avail

Avail NYC exists to be a safe haven for women and men facing an unexpected pregnancy or seeking support after an abortion. We are not a medical provider.

Reaching out for support can feel like a big step, especially when you are carrying something personal, emotional, or uncertain. You might be wondering what kind of space you are walking into, what you will be asked to share, or whether you will feel truly heard.

At Avail, we understand how vulnerable this moment can be. That is why everything we do is designed to help you feel safe, supported, and in control of your own experience.

Whether you are navigating an unexpected pregnancy or processing an abortion experience, we are here to walk with you. You do not have to do this alone.

Choosing the Right Appointment for You

We support both women and men, and we offer appointments in both English and Spanish.

Some people come to talk through a pregnancy decision. Others come to reflect on an abortion experience. And some are not quite sure what they need, but know they want support. That’s okay too.

You can choose the appointment format that feels most comfortable to you. Meet with an advocate in person at our Midtown Manhattan office, schedule a video session on Zoom, or start a confidential conversation over text. Every appointment is one-on-one and centered on your needs.

Scheduling Your Appointment

Booking is simple and secure. We ask for a few basic details, including your name, email, and phone number, so we can confirm your appointment and send reminders. Your information is kept completely private. We never share it, and we will only contact you about your appointment.

Once you choose a time that fits your schedule, we will match you with a trained advocate who will walk with you through whatever you are facing. Every advocate at Avail is compassionate, respectful, and ready to listen without judgment.

Before Your Appointment

You do not need to prepare anything ahead of time. Your advocate will meet you exactly where you are, whether you are feeling overwhelmed, unsure, emotional, or simply curious about what support looks like. All you need to do is show up.

If you are feeling nervous before your appointment, know that many people feel the same way. Taking a first step toward support can bring up all kinds of emotions. Be proud of the courage you have already shown. Giving yourself the space to talk and reflect is a sign of strength.

Here are a few things that may help you feel more at ease:

  • Take care of yourself. Give yourself the space and time you need to rest, hydrate, and breathe. Grabbing a snack or going for a short walk can help release some of the tension you might be carrying. A little self-care can go a long way in helping you feel more grounded.
  • Decide who, if anyone, you want by your side. Some people prefer to come alone. Others bring a partner, friend, or family member. If you are bringing a partner and would like support for them as well, we can provide a male or female advocate to meet with them separately.

This time is for you. You are in control of what you share and how you show up. We are here to walk with you every step of the way.

What to Expect on the Day of Your Appointment

Whether you are meeting in person, over video, or through text, your comfort is our priority. From the moment your appointment begins, your only job is to show up as you are.

Before your appointment, you may receive a text reminder with a brief intake form. Completing it in advance can help your advocate prepare to support you well. If you are not able to fill it out beforehand, your advocate will walk through everything with you during your session.

If you come to our Midtown Manhattan office, you will be welcomed into a peaceful, private space. After a brief check-in, you will be offered tea or water and given time to settle in before you begin.

If your appointment is online, you can join from any space that feels quiet and safe. Some people call from their living room, their car, or while taking a walk. You are welcome to leave your camera off if that helps you feel more comfortable.

Texting appointments are another option if that feels like the best fit for you. Whatever format you choose, we will meet you with the same care and respect.

Connecting with Others Who Understand

One of the most powerful parts of a support group is realizing that you are not alone. Many people feel isolated in their emotions until they hear someone else speak words that reflect their own experience.

Whether you choose to share your thoughts or simply listen, there is comfort in being with others who understand. A Hope Meetup offers the chance to feel seen, supported, and encouraged by people who are walking a similar path.

During the Conversation

Your appointment will last 45 minutes, and you will be able to share with your advocate what you prefer to talk about.

Most conversations begin with a few gentle questions, such as “How are you feeling today?” or “What brought you to Avail?” From there, your advocate will follow your lead. Some people share openly. Others ask a few questions or need support to make sense of what they are feeling. Whatever you need, this space is for you.

Your advocate is trained to offer both emotional and practical support. Whether you are considering parenting, abortion, or adoption, or reflecting on a past abortion experience, they will help you explore your thoughts in a way that honors your values and priorities. Our priority is making sure you know you are not alone.

We serve both women and men. If you are a man seeking support—for yourself or as a partner—we can match you with a male advocate who understands what you may be carrying. Your story matters, and you are welcome here.

After Your Appointment

Taking time to talk with someone takes courage. Whether you leave your appointment feeling lighter, still processing, or unsure of what comes next, know that all of those feelings are valid.

Before you go, your advocate may offer a few suggestions for next steps. You might choose to schedule another appointment, take some time to reflect, or explore other resources. Everything is up to you.

If continued support feels helpful, we offer one-on-one follow-up appointments and ongoing after-abortion support. Your advocate can also connect you with trusted community resources based on your needs and situation.

This conversation is one part of your journey, not the whole story. You are welcome to return anytime, and we will be here when you are ready.
