Frequently asked questions

  • How soon can pregnancy be detected?

The best time to do a pregnancy test is about 7-10 days after having sex, or soon after your first missed period. To ensure maximum accuracy, take the test first thing in the morning as soon as you wake up when hCG levels will be the most concentrated in your urine. (See: When Should I Take a Pregnancy Test for Best Accuracy?)

  • Where can I go to get tested for pregnancy?

If you think you may be unexpectedly pregnant, Avail NYC offers free, self-administered laboratory-quality hCG pregnancy tests, which can provide results within three to five minutes. For New Yorkers, Avail NYC can send a medical-grade pregnancy test to you discreetly in the mail.

  • I think I could be pregnant. What tests do you have?

Avail NYC offers free, medical-grade urine hCG pregnancy tests in our Midtown Manhattan and East Harlem locations. We have appointments available today. All test results are discreet and confidential.

If you'd like to discuss and process your results, you can schedule an appointment with one of our client advocates who can walk you through decision-making tools to help you process your options and provide you with resources to make your decision.

To know if your pregnancy is viable, you'll need an ultrasound. This allows you to understand the timing and plan your next steps. Our medical referral program can help connect you to a free or low-cost OB/GYN appointment.

  • I took a pregnancy test, but I'm not sure it was accurate.

Urine home pregnancy tests are about 99% accurate and blood tests are even more accurate. A home test’s accuracy depends on:

    • How closely you follow the instructions
    • When you ovulate and how soon the egg implants
    • How soon after pregnancy you take the test
    • The sensitivity of the pregnancy test

If you took a pregnancy test at home and are still unsure about the results, it's best to retake a pregnancy test in 2-3 days

  • How do pregnancy tests work?

Pregnancy tests are designed to detect a very specific hormone. This hormone, called human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), is found in a woman’s urine or bloodstream directly after a fertilized egg fastens itself to the uterus wall.

  • I’m having mixed feelings about the possibility of a pregnancy. What should I do?

We know this can feel overwhelming and confusing right now.

Meeting with a client advocate, a non-judgmental third party, can help. Their only goal is to listen to your thoughts and concerns and give you the tools to fully process your decision.

You’ll be in control of what you share and the decision you make.  No matter where you are, talking about it with a client advocate can help you be more confident in your decision. You have tools and resources available to you, and we’ll be with you every step of the way to discuss your wants and needs.
