Pregnancy and abortion are complex experiences. Let’s be real; they affect both men and women. Whether or not you’re in a relationship with your partner, you need time and space to process on your own.

Talking with someone you trust is a great way to evaluate how you're feeling and what you value. If you'd like, you can talk with one of our Client Advocates who are trained to help you process your experience without any judgement, plus support groups to connect you with other New Yorkers who know what you're going through.

Expressing Tough Decisions

Because abortion is often described simply as "medical care", many men don't realize that their emotions after an abortion can be overwhelming.  And you may be unsure of who you can tell and what you should do next. A great first step is to begin to process your thoughts before sharing them with others.

Process Your Thoughts
  • I'm having unresolved feelings about my partners abortion.

You're not alone. It's common to feel a mix of emotions after an abortion, even if you and your partner feel confident about the decision you made.

Studies reveal that men often don’t start processing pregnancy loss until two years afterward. Why is this? It’s usually because they have been so focused on helping their partners that they don’t allow themselves to process their own emotions about abortion.

While it's not always easy to talk about your abortion to friends and family members who might not understand the complexity of the decision you made. Sometimes you just need a confidential, non-judgmental place to process your thoughts. Our Client Advocates are compassionate, unbiased, and have their own abortion experiences to draw from.

When you're ready to talk, we're here to listen.

  • Is it normal to feel upset after an abortion?

Men can be caught off-guard by the unexpected emotional impact that abortion has on them and their partners. They report strong feelings that are difficult to process after an abortion, sometimes for years.

You may benefit from the support of a mental health professional if you are feeling depressed, anxious, overwhelmed, or guilty. If you are experiencing thoughts of suicide, please reach out to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline now by calling 1-800-273-8255 for 24/7 support.
