Tiffany's eyes filled with tears as she stared at the pregnancy test in her hands. The result was not what she had hoped for—it was positive. She couldn't believe it, so she decided to take another test, and then another. The reality began to sink in and panic ran through her body.
“What do I do? What do I do? Am I reading this test right? I don't know what to do.”
In the following days, Tiffany found herself overwhelmed by questions. She spent countless hours trying to piece together how this could have happened. Who was responsible? What had led to this moment? When and where did it occur? Never-ending questions swirled endlessly in her mind, leaving her emotionally drained.
Still in a state of shock, Tiffany decided to seek guidance and support. She turned to Avail NYC where she was paired with a client advocate named Elizabeth. Through their sessions, Tiffany poured out her fears, anxieties, and hopes to Elizabeth. She explained the life-changing decision she would be facing if she ended up a single mother. Disappointed in herself, Tiffany had only just begun her dream career in the tech industry at 26 years old. Now, she carried a secret that weighed heavily on her shoulders.
“You think it cannot happen to you and you can live ignorantly until it does. I did always want to be a mom. I wanted to do it the ‘right way’ with a family and husband. To do it the nontraditional way by accident made me feel very ashamed.”
Together, Tiffany and Elizabeth explored the various options and concerns that lay before her. They crafted pros and cons charts, diving into every detail of the different scenarios and how they would impact Tiffany's goals and aspirations for her life.
“I considered abortion pretty heavily. I considered adoption. All three options were in the running. I had voices from all sides giving me advice. Once I decided to loop in more friends, we would debrief after every Avail session again, asking those why now questions.
Why did this not happen when I was 18 and running around wild?”
During her sessions, Tiffany's emotions ran high. Some discussions lasted for hours, as she allowed her fears to unravel, tears streaming down her face. Avail provided her with a safe space to process her thoughts and feelings.
“Avail helped me process it very realistically. There was no judgment, no pressure. It never felt like there was any sort of agenda. Just come as you are and let's have an open dialogue. Let's talk. Let's cry, let's laugh, let's just talk about what Tiffany is wanting out of this.”
