Pregnancy Tests

Taking a pregnancy test is the first step to determining if you are pregnant.

Avail provides free, self-administered pregnancy tests (hCG urine test), which can detect pregnancy hormones ten days after conception and provide results within three to five minutes.

If you live in NYC or the surrounding area, think you might be pregnant, and don’t know what to do, make a same-day appointment at Avail to find out if you are pregnant. During your appointment, you will take a free pregnancy test and have the opportunity to meet with one of Avail’s client advocates to talk about your pregnancy options.

If you are pregnant, Avail can refer you to a licensed medical center for a free or low-cost ultrasound exam, which will measure viability and tell you how far along you are in your pregnancy. An ultrasound exam can be a useful tool for you in your decision-making process, and results are available the same day.

What to expect

  • What should I do if my pregnancy test is positive?

If your pregnancy test is positive, ask your client advocate if you are eligible for an ultrasound exam. If so, Avail may refer you to a licensed medical center for a free or low-cost ultrasound to measure the viability and length of your pregnancy.

Your client advocate is also available to talk you through your thoughts and emotions as you begin the process of making a decision about your unexpected pregnancy. Avail’s client advocates are knowledgeable and caring, and they will help you (and your partner, if you choose to include him) obtain the decision-making information and support you need if you find yourself pregnant and don’t know what to do.

  • What should I do if my pregnancy test is negative?

If your pregnancy test is negative, you will have the opportunity to talk to your client advocate about sex, pregnancy prevention, and healthy relationships.

Avail NYC is a decision-making center, not a medical facility. Free pregnancy tests are self-administered, and ultrasound exams are provided by referral to a licensed medical center.
