Making Your Decision
Before you make a decision about an unexpected pregnancy, take time to consider all of your options.
Facing an unexpected pregnancy can feel overwhelming. You might feel confused, angry, afraid, or alone. If you are pregnant or think you might be pregnant, Avail NYC is here to help empower you to make a thoughtful decision.
When you come in for an appointment at Avail, you will have the opportunity to meet with a client advocate, who will address any concerns you may have and provide you with a decision-making tool that will help you process your options.
At Avail, our goal is for you to be informed, so that you will feel empowered to make the best decision for you and your pregnancy. If you find yourself unexpectedly pregnant, you have three options to consider: abortion, parenting, and adoption. Learn more about each of these options below and make an appointment at Avail to talk with a client advocate about which is the best option for you.
What is an abortion?
Abortion is the intentional termination of a pregnancy. In New York state, abortions are legal up to 24 weeks of pregnancy. Avail does not perform or refer for abortions, but can provide you with information about the different types of chemical and surgical abortions available.
How do I know if abortion is the right option for me?
Abortion is a very personal decision that affects women in many different ways. Some women feel confident in their decision to terminate a pregnancy, while others feel pressured by partners or family members, or regret the decision later on.
To decide what the right option is for you, make an appointment to speak with a client advocate at Avail. Your client advocate will help guide you through a decision-making tool that will help you determine what you want to do. Avail can also connect you with women who have faced an unexpected pregnancy and decided to abort, as well as women who considered abortion but decided to carry to term. Avail’s client advocates are here to support you.
I had an abortion in the past and am looking for emotional support. Can you help me?
Avail offers after-abortion support for women who have had an abortion in the past and have unresolved feelings about it. At Avail, we recognize that everyone processes an abortion differently. Client advocates are available to meet with you one-on-one, and Avail also offers nine-week support groups. Support groups are safe, confidential environments for women to speak about their past abortions with others who share similar experiences.
If you have unresolved feelings following an abortion, make an appointment at Avail.
What is adoption?
Adoption is the legal process in which a birth parent gives over parental rights to adoptive parents. There are two main kinds of adoptions: closed adoptions and open adoptions. In a closed adoption, birth parents and adoptive parents do not share identifying information or have contact with each other. In an open adoption, birth parents and adoptive parents share information freely and communicate with each other.
How do I know if adoption is the right choice for me?
Adoption is a brave choice that gives other women and couples the opportunity to parent a child. To decide if adoption might be the right option for you, make an appointment to speak with a client advocate at Avail. Your client advocate will help guide you through a decision-making tool that will help you determine what you want to do.
If you decide adoption is the right decision for you, you will be in control of selecting a family for your child, as well as deciding whether you would like to have an open or closed adoption. There are many wonderful people looking to adopt, and our client advocates are knowledgeable about a number of adoption options. Avail can also connect you with women who have had a personal experience with adoption (birth parents and adoptive parents).
If you are considering adoption, you may also want to visit BraveLove.org, where you can find information on adoption, as well as read interviews and watch videos about women’s adoption experiences.
Can Avail connect me with trustworthy adoption agencies?
Yes, Avail client advocates can refer you to several trustworthy, easy-to-work-with adoption agencies if you decide adoption is the right choice for you.
What is parenting?
Parenting is the act of being a mother or father to a child.
How do I know if parenting is the right choice for me?
For many facing an unexpected pregnancy, parenting may initially feel overwhelming. You may have questions and concerns about bringing a baby into your life. We know.
