What to expect at Avail
What should I expect if I am coming to Avail to confirm or make a decision about an unexpected pregnancy?
If you are visiting Avail for the first time, you can expect to be warmly welcomed at the front desk. You will then be given basic paperwork to fill out. If you are unsure if you are pregnant or need to confirm a pregnancy, you will be given a free pregnancy test (self-administered urine test). If you are far enough along in your pregnancy, Avail may refer you for a free or low-cost ultrasound exam
at a licensed medical center. An ultrasound exam can tell you if your pregnancy is viable and how far along you are. During your appointment, you will also meet with a client advocate, who will offer you a decision-making tool that can help you process your options if you are pregnant and don’t know what to do. Avail’s client advocates practice reflective listening, and everything discussed in your appointment is completely confidential. Many of Avail’s clients return for ongoing support after their initial appointment.
What should I expect if I am coming to Avail for after-abortion support?
If you are visiting Avail for the first time for after-abortion support, you can expect to be warmly welcomed at the front desk. You will then be given basic paperwork to fill out. You will then have the opportunity to speak with a client advocate about your past abortion experience. Avail’s client advocates are supportive and practice reflective listening, and everything discussed in your appointment is completely confidential. You will also have the opportunity to join a nine-week after-abortion support group if you are interested. Avail’s support group is a safe place for women to share their stories with others who have had similar experiences, and the support-group curriculum incorporates journal prompts and self-care activities that facilitate healing.
