Is My Pregnancy Viable?

Is My Pregnancy Viable?

You’ve taken a home pregnancy test and the result has come back positive. It’s not the answer you were hoping for, and it’s completely understandable that you probably panicked and felt overwhelmed.

Now that you are thinking more clearly, you might be wondering if your pregnancy is viable (is it healthy and will it continue, or is it likely you’ll have a miscarriage?)

What should you do? Should you just wait to see if you are one of the 10-15 percent of pregnant women who have a miscarriage? Or should you do something a bit more proactive?

At Avail NYC, we encourage you to make an appointment to come in for decision-making services. This means you come in and meet with one of our client advocates. They care about you and what you are going through, and they are here to listen, to answer your questions, and to help you as you look at all your options and make the best decision for you.

We are committed to a non-judgmental environment where you can be comfortable no matter your situation. We are a place where you will find the support you need.

Step 1: Pregnancy Test

Once you have met with a client advocate, you will be offered a free, self-administered pregnancy test to re-confirm your home results. Confirmation of a positive result is an important step.

Step 2: Results

Once the test has been completed (this will take up to five minutes), your client advocate will meet with you to discuss how you feel about your results.

Step 3: Ultrasound

If you have a confirmed pregnancy, and you are far enough along in your pregnancy, we will offer you a free ultrasound referral through a licensed women’s medical center that operates a location on the same floor as Avail.

It is the ultrasound that will be able to clearly tell you if your pregnancy is viable and how far along your pregnancy is. It can also determine if your pregnancy is ectopic. Ectopic pregnancy can be life-threatening and requires medical treatment.

Ultrasounds use high-frequency sound waves to form an image and are often performed at seven to eight weeks of pregnancy. They are a reliable tool and the results will be given to you the same day.

Step 4: Decision-Making Tool

If the results show that your pregnancy is viable, your client advocate will offer you a decision-making tool that helps you to sort through your thoughts and feelings and helps you take into consideration your situation, values, and goals as you consider your options.

You will be given all the information you need to understand the benefits and risks of each option, and you will be supported no matter which option you choose.
