Balancing an Unplanned Pregnancy in a New Relationship

Balancing an Unplanned Pregnancy in a New Relationship

An unplanned pregnancy by itself is hard to deal with. Getting pregnant in the beginning of a new relationship adds another complicated dimension. You may not know each other that well yet and you aren’t able to predict your partner’s reaction to the news. Will he stick around and be supportive or will he walk away?

Maybe you’re crazy in love. Maybe you’re just “in like.” If he’s willing to stick around, do you want him to? What if he wants to get married? Uncertainty can be hard to handle and we are here to support you at Avail NYC.

When facing an unplanned pregnancy, you might not feel happy and excited, at least not in the beginning. Scared and confused might be more your speed right now. Or maybe you adjust quickly and are digging in, figuring things out, and are ready to make some decisions.

There is no “right” way to feel about an unplanned pregnancy, just as there is no “wrong” way, either. Whichever way you feel, that’s the right one for you.

What We Know

You’re not alone. In 2011, nearly half (45% or 2.8 million) of the 6.1 million pregnancies in the United States each year were unintended, according to the Guttmacher Institute. That’s 2.8 million women just like you, every year.

Your life isn’t over. With 2.8 million women each year finding themselves unexpectedly pregnant, it’s reasonable to expect that people are more used to single women getting pregnant than in the past, and there is no reason to feel ashamed. The only opinion that matters is yours. There are a lot of young single women who not only parent, but have successful careers, maintain strong relationships, and enjoy fulfilling, rewarding lives.

You Have Options

An unplanned pregnancy isn’t the end of the world because you have options. You can choose abortion, adoption, or parenting. At Avail NYC, we are committed to providing accurate, unbiased information so you can make the best possible decision for YOU. We will answer all of your questions and support you throughout the decision-making process and beyond.

Come in and See Us

Come in and see us at Avail NYC. We can give you a free, self-administered pregnancy test and if it confirms you are pregnant, we can offer you a referral for a free ultrasound to determine if the pregnancy is viable, if it is an ectopic pregnancy (which needs medical treatment right away), and the gestational age. The ultrasound is performed on site by a third-party women’s medical clinic.

Once this is completed, we will give you a decision-making tool that helps you take into account your situation, values, and goals as you decide which path is the best one for you to follow. Our caring advocates will be there for you every step of the way to listen and help you process.

Abortion Information

Abortion Information

When you’re faced with an unexpected pregnancy, it can be overwhelming. Even scary. What should you do? How can you face this? There are some decisions ahead of you, and it can be hard to know which one is right for you.

One of your choices is an abortion. Abortion information can be found all over the web, but there is a lot of misinformation out there, so how do you know what is true and what isn’t? Here at Avail NYC, we strive to provide honest and accurate information so you can make the best decision for you.

There are a few types of abortion, and the right one for you depends solely on how far along you are in your pregnancy. The timeframe allowing for abortion can change from state to state. For instance, Wisconsin allows them to take place up until 20 weeks, while other states such as New York, Massachusetts, Florida, and Nevada allow abortions up to 24 weeks.

The Abortion Pill

The abortion pill, used until a pregnancy is 10 weeks along, is actually a combination of two pills, taken separately. The first pill, mifepristone, blocks progesterone in your body. Two days later you will take the second pill, prostaglandin. You will make a final visit to the clinic to make sure the abortion was completed.

Surgical Abortion Procedures

Aside from the abortion pill, there are different surgical abortion procedures, which also depend on how far along you are in your pregnancy.

Aspiration can be done within seven weeks. Suction curettage is most commonly done between six and 14 weeks. A variation of this procedure, dilation and curettage, is also done between six and 14 weeks of pregnancy.

Dilation and evacuation can be done from 13 to 24 weeks and late-term abortion, from 20 weeks up to 24 weeks, takes three to four days to complete, using a few different drugs for different stages of the process, and ends in a surgical procedure.

Before You Decide

Before you make any decisions, call or make an appointment at Avail NYC. Our client services team offers unbiased information in a caring, non-judgmental environment.

Come in for a free, self-administered pregnancy test. If it comes back positive, Avail offers referrals to a women’s medical facility for free ultrasound exams to qualifying clients. This will confirm the pregnancy is viable, not dangerously ectopic, and tell you how far along you are in your pregnancy.

At Avail NYC, our caring advocates work hard to make sure you have all the information you need, the space to ask questions, and provide an environment where you are empowered. We want you to be confident in the decisions you make.

Is My Pregnancy Viable?

Is My Pregnancy Viable?

You’ve taken a home pregnancy test and the result has come back positive. It’s not the answer you were hoping for, and it’s completely understandable that you probably panicked and felt overwhelmed.

Now that you are thinking more clearly, you might be wondering if your pregnancy is viable (is it healthy and will it continue, or is it likely you’ll have a miscarriage?)

What should you do? Should you just wait to see if you are one of the 10-15 percent of pregnant women who have a miscarriage? Or should you do something a bit more proactive?

At Avail NYC, we encourage you to make an appointment to come in for decision-making services. This means you come in and meet with one of our client advocates. They care about you and what you are going through, and they are here to listen, to answer your questions, and to help you as you look at all your options and make the best decision for you.

We are committed to a non-judgmental environment where you can be comfortable no matter your situation. We are a place where you will find the support you need.

Step 1: Pregnancy Test

Once you have met with a client advocate, you will be offered a free, self-administered pregnancy test to re-confirm your home results. Confirmation of a positive result is an important step.

Step 2: Results

Once the test has been completed (this will take up to five minutes), your client advocate will meet with you to discuss how you feel about your results.

Step 3: Ultrasound

If you have a confirmed pregnancy, and you are far enough along in your pregnancy, we will offer you a free ultrasound referral through a licensed women’s medical center that operates a location on the same floor as Avail.

It is the ultrasound that will be able to clearly tell you if your pregnancy is viable and how far along your pregnancy is. It can also determine if your pregnancy is ectopic. Ectopic pregnancy can be life-threatening and requires medical treatment.

Ultrasounds use high-frequency sound waves to form an image and are often performed at seven to eight weeks of pregnancy. They are a reliable tool and the results will be given to you the same day.

Step 4: Decision-Making Tool

If the results show that your pregnancy is viable, your client advocate will offer you a decision-making tool that helps you to sort through your thoughts and feelings and helps you take into consideration your situation, values, and goals as you consider your options.

You will be given all the information you need to understand the benefits and risks of each option, and you will be supported no matter which option you choose.
