Frequently Asked Questions

We understand that you may have a lot of questions on your mind. Check out some common questions and answers below and if there's anything else you want to ask us, feel free to email us here.

Who we are...

  • Do you have a political stance or affiliation?

    Avail is a non-political organization.

Our staff and volunteers do not bring their politics to work. Our client care is never affected or motivated by a political agenda.

  • Is Avail pro-life or pro-choice?

We are committed to client care without judgment, political rhetoric, or pressure. Our person-centric approach means we’re here to help you find the option you feel confident about. No politics or agenda.

  • Do you have a religious affiliation?

Our staff and volunteers serve New Yorkers from every cultural and religious background, and 99% of our clients report that they would recommend us to a friend.

We were founded by Christians, like many non-profits in New York City that do excellent work. Avail exists to love our neighbors as ourselves. Our compassionate advocacy is for everyone, and we treat each client with dignity and respect regardless of ethnicity, economic status, religion, sexual orientation, or political beliefs.

It's hard to believe a truly neutral, judgment-free place exists. We know. We've been there, and when we couldn't find it, we built one from scratch.

  • Does Avail support reproductive rights?

Reproductive rights have become intertwined with an intense political debate. At Avail, we believe women are people, not political pawns, so we purposefully stay out of the fray, leave politics at the door, and focus entirely on you

We stay informed on the latest updates to NY State law and social services in the tri-state region that are available to you. If you have a question, we want to provide answers and resources for you to fully explore your options.

  • Does Avail have a Privacy Policy or Terms of Use?

Yes! Read more about our Privacy Policy and Terms of Use.

What we do...

  • What are your services?

Avail serves New Yorkers through four programs.

    Unexpected Pregnancy

We advocate for women and men facing an unexpected pregnancy decision, listening to their stories and concerns. We offer a safe, confidential setting where they can process emotions, doubts, and important questions.

    Pregnancy & Parenting Support

For our clients who choose to move forward with their pregnancy, we provide parenting support. We assist them with practical resources, such as labor and delivery classes, mentoring from a budgeting expert, or information on adoption services.

    After-Abortion Support

We provide women and men the opportunity to process an abortion experience one-on-one or in a group, without judging their past or presuming how they ought to feel.

    Healthy Relationships

For clients seeking to strengthen or rebuild their network of relationships, we provide tools and curriculum to help. These one-on-one meetings facilitate deeper self-awareness and stronger interpersonal connections with friends, families, and romantic partners.

  • Do you provide or refer for abortions?

Avail is not a medical provider. We will discuss all of your options (abortion, adoption, and parenting), and walk alongside you with support and resources regardless of what you choose. We encourage you to consult with a medical professional for your medical needs, and we can offer referrals to a free or low-cost OB/GYN.

  • Is Avail NYC a medical provider?

No. It is not uncommon for people to assume that an organization serving women and men facing an unexpected pregnancy is a medical clinic. However, care for those facing a pregnancy decision extends far beyond just the medical service one may need—that's where we come in. We provide a safe place for people to process thoughts, fears, and emotions, as they identify their needs. We work to empower women and men in their decision-making, providing practical and emotional support to equip them on their journey.

The professional medical community is the only one equipped to handle the medical needs of our clients, and so, if a client doesn't already have a medical practitioner they're seeing, we help connect them to low-cost or free medical care.

  • Do you offer services in person?

Yes!  We have appointments available at our Midtown location. You can also meet with a Personal Advocate for an online appointment via Zoom.  Schedule now.

  • Do I have to pay for an appointment?

No. All of our programs and services are free and confidential.

  • What are your hours?

We're open Monday & Tuesday 8:30 AM-8 PM, Wednesday 8:30 AM-4 PM, Thursday 12:00 PM-8:00 PM, & Friday 12:00 PM-5 PM. Please check our appointment times to confirm.

Get Involved!

We'd love for you to join our community of partners and volunteers.

See more about volunteering below, or check out our giving page.

Volunteer

  • What do Avail volunteers do?

Volunteers at Avail serve in great capacity and in a variety of ways.  Avail utilizes male and female volunteers for personal advocate positions in our parenting support, after-abortion care, and healthy relationships programs. Volunteers are also able to help with administrative responsibilities.

  • How does Avail vet volunteers?

Avail is focused on creating a team of people who are passionate about our mission and well-trained. Each volunteer must submit an online application form and be invited to a formal interview. The next step is in-depth training conducted by experienced staff, as well as participation in our on-boarding shadow program to evaluate progress and readiness for the chosen role.

  • How are volunteers different from Avail staff?

Avail was founded by volunteers and a large portion of our work is accomplished through the volunteer team. Avail has great respect for the experience and perspective each volunteer brings to our service. Ability and willingness dictates the level of responsibility given to each individual volunteer.

  • Can I volunteer for Avail?

At the moment, we are looking for female Hope volunteers for our After Abortion program and Male volunteers for our four core programs. To learn more about volunteering, please email support@availnyc.org
